Amazingly enough, summer is already winding down. We can tell because the Brierley Hill garden is overflowing with goodness and school is starting.
The garden adds to the charm of our elegant, country bed and breakfast. It allows us to include the warm and welcoming.touch of fresh flowers to our decor. Our 15-raised beds also yield herbs and vegetables and create another charming nook of the inn that guests enjoy strolling through. This summer tomatoes, squash, cucumber, spinach, and berries have been among the fruits and vegetables infusing our delightful breakfast creations with rich flavor.
With school starting, Virginia Military Institute is prepared for family visits with dates set through March. The first open house is Sept 13-14 — creating a perfect opportunity for parents to stay at Brierley Hill Bed and Breakfast and enjoy the garden’s final hoorah while their children get the student-focused VMI tour. Visits to Washington and Lee University are popular around this time as well; they must be scheduled with the school. Time your visit to enjoy the area offerings.
Families visiting in October will likely be able to enjoy prime leaf-peeping in Lexington and all of Rockbridge County. Views from the inn alone are stunning as Brierley Hill looks over the Shenandoah Valley, but after college visits, a hike or bike ride might be especially relaxing.
Actually, a popular bike ride, the 45-mile Lexington-Goshen Loop might stretch the definition of relaxing. Not only is it a long ride, but parts of it are also quite steep, and part of it is along Route 39 near Goshen Pass, which can get busy with car traffic. Rambler over Turkey Hill is among several more relaxing routes for an experienced rider. The route sees less auto traffic but provides stunning scenery.
This is a great time for families, particularly parents with college-bound juniors, to explore Lexington’s renowned colleges as well as its natural and historical offerings. And Brierley Hill is the perfect home base for an extended family weekend to end the summer or welcome the fall. Reserve your room today.
